Why did the 1990s include a constant barrage of “healthy” dieting beliefs and hype? For one, being thin became somewhat of an obsession and expectation, potentially exacerbated by the popularity of the body mass index (BMI). By the ’90s, doctors and patients were using the index to assess overall healthiness. Today, we’ve discovered that your BMI doesn’t tell the whole story. As dietitian Tim Crowe told ABC in 2022, “A better focus is to be as healthy as you can be at whatever weight you are.”

Another 1990s trend was the popularity of “heroin chic.” The idea was that if you lost enough weight to seem almost frail (as if you had been taking drugs), you were in style. In reality, though, denying yourself food can be detrimental to your overall physical health and mental well-being. According to health expert Dr. Fiona Willer, “Restriction will always backfire, whatever we tell ourselves we can’t eat is what our brain presents to us as [the thing] we want to eat” (via ABC). Nonetheless, restriction and denial were goals for many in the 1990s and may have helped spur the following outdated diet foods.

Low-fat and fat-free items were in nearly every grocery aisle

<picture id="p5f60d403459f08b19f8f1d4e3480e90d"></picture>didinj/Shutterstock

You can certainly find low-fat and fat-free foods in any grocery store. However, those types of “dieting” items were practically everywhere in the 1990s, following a notable surge in low-fat eating in the 1980s. It seemed like just about every brand in nearly every food category wanted to remove as much fat from its products as possible.

For example, when Nabisco introduced SnackWell’s, a collection of reduced-fat or no-fat sweet treats in the early 1990s, people clamored for them. Were they healthy? You be the judge. An evaluation from the Environmental Working Group said they were ultra-processed and contained nearly half their weight in sugar.

Arguably, one of the biggest fat-bashing food fails was the introduction of fat-free potato chips. They were marketed as chips you could eat without guilt because they used a chemical-based alternative fat instead of real oils. Unfortunately, the miracle non-oil, called Olestra, encouraged a nasty gut side effect: watery and greasy diarrhea. Over time, the stomach-churning chips disappeared from shelves.

Meal replacements provided limited nutrition and satisfaction

<picture id="pc3058c11117b46758aef305299f86161"></picture>Fractal Pictures/Shutterstock

Piggybacking on the meal replacement shakes of the 1980s that jumpstarted Oprah Winfrey’s weight-loss transformation, various meal replacement options became big business for food brands in the 1990s. At first, most meal replacements were liquid in nature, which wasn’t a great solution.

As registered dietitian and nutritionist Talia Follador explained to EatingWell, “Liquid meal replacements were heavily promoted as a way to control calories, but they often replaced real meals without addressing hunger, satisfaction or long-term habits.” Rather than just offering people diet shakes, the meal replacement choices tried to engage the palate a little more. As such, a 1990s dieter might choose a meal replacement bar or cookie, such as the second-generation revival of the 1980s Carnation breakfast bar.

Meal replacement bars are still available these days, but it’s better to look for bars that contain whole-food ingredients, essential nutrients like vitamins, protein, and fiber, and at least 200 calories – a more science-backed approach than choosing a meal replacement just to eat as little as possible.

Supposedly healthier fast food meals were said to stave off weight gain

<picture id="p4e28ee040ec2c7ebb24151acab2812cf"></picture>Solstock/Getty Images

If you didn’t grow up in the 1990s, you likely don’t remember the strange diet trend of going to a fast food restaurant to lose weight. Back then, many fast food leaders were trying to position some of their menu choices as ways to quickly and cheaply get full without expanding your waistline, like freshly stuffed pitas, broiled burgers, and mega salads. The introduction of healthier options, like low-fat or reduced-sodium products, became available at various fast food chains, including McDonald’s and Dairy Queen.

Perhaps the most prominent example of this peculiar ’90s diet trend came from Subway. In the 1990s, a non-celebrity Subway patron managed to lose more than 200 pounds by just eating specific Subway foods every day. When Subway found out, it jumped at the chance to tell the world. As a result, the Subway diet became a known weight-loss technique. However, it mainly worked because it limited calories to around 1,000 per day. This is considerably lower than the daily calorie intake recommendation for adults, which starts at 1,600 calories and increases depending on age, gender, and lifestyle.

Soybean oil-based butter sprays were everywhere

<picture id="p40b57f41e4143b0ef7148e9a619b4733"></picture>kryzhov/Shutterstock

The anti-fat-in-food movement of the 1990s caused a major backlash against the consumption of butter and oils in general, which, to some, were synonymous with fat. But aside from margarine, the food industry pushed another alternative product to get people to stop slathering their pans and foods with oils and spreads. During this decade, manufacturers introduced sprays — primarily made of soybean oil alongside a few additives and flavorings — that added a buttery taste to dishes.

It was a creative move that was supposed to make sure people ate as little oil as possible, since only a small bit of the product came out with each spray. However, the trend eventually melted like butter, as various studies revealed the health dangers of the trans fats that keep products like margarine tasty and shelf-stable. Namely, these trans fats have been linked to heart disease. That said, you can still buy these sprays for your next popcorn night — that is, if you don’t mind the somewhat questionable, sometimes hard-to-pronounce ingredients on the label that may or may not be good for your health.

pain au chocolat/Shutterstock Every decade seems to bring diet fads that eventually become outdated, and while some of these diet trends deserve a comeback, the ’90s were certainly chock full of weight-loss trends that may leave modern consumers scratching (and shaking) their heads.
